Ret. Lt Col. Walter H. Sitz, 83, a career Marine who was a veteran of World War I, died in Bethesda Naval Hospital March 12 after a brief illness. He lived on Turner Lane in Chevy Chase.
After graduating from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1916, Sitz was commissioned in the Marines. In 1918 he participated in the battles of Belleau Woods, Soissons and St. Mihiel with the 6th Marines.
Sitz had lived in the Washington area since 1941, the year he became a member of the Marine Examining Board here. From 1942 until his retirement in 1946 he was with the Navy Department here.
He leaves his wife, Toni; two sons, Clifford E., of Arlington, and Lt. Col. Werner C., of Philadelphia; three stepdaughters, Doris Anderson of Syracuse, N.Y., Valerie Greenberg of Chapel Hill, N. C., and Jacqueline Gray of Durham, N.C., and five grandchildren.
