Son of Samuel H. Short and Blanche Virginia Abbott Short. Elmer, who reside in Dover, Delaware, served as a Sergeant and aerial gunner on a B-25 Mitchell Bomber, 438th Squadron, 310th Group, 57th Wing, 12th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was "Killed In Action" when his bomber was shot down by enemy action and crashed. He had served in the Air Corps for one year and eight months at the time of his death and was decorated with an Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart.
