World War II Veteran Captain Charles Sharpless, U.S. Army Air Forces, 29, made the ultimate sacrifice during air operations over North Africa. Charles was flying with the 97th Bombardment Squadron, 47th Bombardment Group (Light) on a mission from their base at Thelepte Airfield, Tunisia against German airfields at La Fauconnerie, Tunisia when he was killed in action.

Charles was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in NOV 1940, and in SEP 1942 he was sent overseas - the same month he was promoted to Captain.

He was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart & Air Medal.

Charles was a brother of the Delaware Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at University of Delaware.

He married Patricia Ann (Wilson) 18 MAY 1941 in Tacoma, WA. (In 1944, she married Trammell Henshaw Hollis; Memorial: 115413973)

He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery 11 JUN 1948.
