Maj. Donald L. Schoenlein , 84, Lake Lotawana, Mo., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19. 2007.

Donald was born on July 23, 1923, in Portland, Ind., to Earl and Lena (Limbacher) Schoenlein . He graduated from Portland High School and went on to Purdue University to study mathematics and chemistry. After two years of college, he entered into the Army Air Corps. Donald was a retired Major from the U.S. Air Force, member of the Army Air Corps in World War II, was shot down behind enemy lines and was the only survivor in the B-24 Liberator. Donald was a POW in Germany for 11 months during World War II and was ranking officer at the camp.

During his time served, he received many commendations including two Air Medals and three Purple Hearts.

After the war, he was employed as a certified gemologist and watchmaker. Donald was active in the American Legion Post No. 499 and Elks Lodge No. 2509. He was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Schoenlein ; daughter, Diana Bantz; brother, Bill Schoenlein ; sister, Mid Neare; and first wife, Gene Robbins.

Donald is survived by daughters, Connie and Donald Leven, Lake Lotawana, and Susan Schoenlein of the home; grandchildren, Jon and Cheryl Bennett, Tonia and Rob Bomar, Samatha and Kirk Stobart, Greg Davis, Donnie and Alicia Leven, Misty and Aaron Cox, Sherry Bantz; nine and half great-grandchildren; brother, Earl Schoenlein and wife Molly of Garden Grove, Calif; sister-in-law, Susie Schoenlein , Portland Ind.; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St. Inurnment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post No. 499.
