Lt. Col. Nelson Dies; Hospital Executive
Lt. Col. Francis Cusick Nelson, 44, a staff officer in the Army Surgeon General's Office, died Sunday after a heart attack at his home in Falls Church, Vs.
Col. Nelson was chief of the Technical Liaison Office in the Surgeon General's Office at the time of his death, a post also held from 1948 to 1952.
He came to the Pentagon last year, after four years as executive officer of the Army Hospital at Fort Leavenworth, Kans., where he received a certificate of achievement for outstanding service.
A native of La Junta, Colo., he held a journalism degree fom the Municipal University of Omaha, Nebr., and in 1959 obtained at master's degree in hospital administration from Baylor University.
After working as a newspaper reporter for the Omaha News-Herald and advertising manager for the Aircraft News in Santa Monica, Calif., he entered the Army in 1942.
He served as a hospital adjutant from 1944-45 in Europe and in 1947 was public information officer at Oliver General Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
During the Korean War, Col. Nelson was executive officer of the 11th Evacuation Hospital and of the medical section, headquarters, United States Army.
He held the Bronze Star, awarded in 1954, the Army commendation ribbon, and the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal.
Col. Nelson was a member of the American Hospital Association amd the Kiwanis Club.
He leaves his wife, Frances, and a daughter, Pamela Ann, of the home address, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis W. Nelson of Omaha.
Friends may call at the Rinaldi Funeral Home, 616 H street N.E., from 7 o'clock this evening until 10 p.m. tomorrow. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Fort Myer (Va.) Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.
