Gene was a lifelong resident of Oklahoma. In 1940, his family moved to McAlester and later his parents purchased land in Indianola, OK where they built a home, farmed the land and where the family farmhouse still stands today. Gene graduated from Indianola schools and here is where he met his sweetheart, Lorene (or as she's known to folks today, "Red" or "Corky") Ragan. They were married at St. John's Catholic Church in McAlester on May 14, 1949. After his tour of duty in the military, Gene and Corky settled in Houston in 1953. Gene soon went to work for Baker Oil Tools, a company he ultimately retired from after 33 years of service at the ripe old age of 55. After he retired from Baker, his heart called him back to the farm and Gene and Corky moved back to their true home. Gene had purchased land from his parent's estate and he ranched during the time he lived in Houston. The adventures back and forth between Houston and Indianola provided lots of stories about harrowing rides on the unpaved road. Gene and Corky have both been giving and wonderful influences in the lives of many of their nieces and nephews. They helped by putting some through college or by providing guidance and a helping hand through the trying times. Through the years they were strict, but their caring and love for children seemed to be in endless supply. Gene was an avid sports fan, whether watching from the stands or from a comfy chair. If he wasn't out in the fields or tending to cattle you'd probably find him watching a game of Baseball, Basketball, or Football (depending on the season). His love of basketball lasted through his later years (he played weekly until he was 80) and he always enjoyed going to the Girls Basketball games and became known to many as the "Bleacher" referee. His passion for sports turned into an incredible desire to help others appreciate how important sports are. He put his passion into action and re-built the baseball field for the local Indianola Schools; one that still carries his name which inspires all those who play in it. "Gene Schumacher Field, Home of the Warriors" is a testament to the heart of a true sports fan. This quiet, giving man expanded his relationship with the local school system and he went on to serve on the Indianola School Board and was instrumental in building the conference room for the school. We have all loved him in our own special way even when he called you "George." He was always teasing but it was his way of showing you how much he loved you. Let us all be grateful for the countless moments of love and joy Gene gave us and let's be truly thankful for having known this loving man. He passed away at his residence at the age of 82. Gene is survived by: Loving Wife: Lorene Ragan Schumacher; Sisters: Dorothy Schumacher Stokes; Jeanene Schumacher Butler; Peggy Schumacher Cantrell; Brother: Jimmy Lawrence Schumacher; and Sister-in-Law Betty Wright Schumacher; and Numerous Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by: Father: Frank Harmon Schumacher, Mother, Lillian Stover Schumacher Parnell, Brother: Billy Arnold Schumacher, Sister: Linda Marie Schumacher; Nephew: Stephen Butler; Nephew: Kenneth Robert Stokes; Nephew: Douglas Effinger. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bishop Chapel of Memories, led by the Rev. Leonard Higgins. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Church with the Rev. Leonard Higgins officiating. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in McAlester. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
