Obituary - The man responsible for the development of Thorofare Markets as a modern supermarket operation, Louis Bree Smith Sr., 74, of Sarasota, FL, died yesterday (June 11, 1968 in his home.
He was president of the firm from 1939 until his retirement in 1956. He had become affiliated with the P.H. Butler Co. Grocery operation as advertising director in the 1930s.
In 1939 he was named president, reorganized the firm and in 1949 changed the name of the company from P.H. Butler to Thorofare.
Mr. Smith first wife died several years ago (Dorothy May Wells).
Surviving are his second wife, Betty Louise Smith; a son, L. B. Smith Jr., Pittsburgh, who succeeded his father as president of Thorofare but left the firm two years and; a daughter, Mrs James G. Lee Oakmont; five grandchildren and a sister, Mrs.. Mary Walter, Woodsfield, Ohio.
Funeral will be held in Sarasota at the Toale, Funeral Home, 440 N. Orange Ave.
