Enlisted 6 October 1814 as a private in Captain Jehu Stephen's Company, Major Chiles's Battalion of Mounted Gunmen, East Tennessee Volunteers (same battalion in which Moses Defrees served). He enlisted from Blount county, Tennesse, about two weeks after his uncle Moses, and they both served until 1 May 1815, when the war ended.
