Moses and his wife Sarah D. Blood Meder, and their daughter Angeline, were the first Anglo family in Santa Cruz, California. They had come to San Francisco in August 1846, on Elder Sam Brannan's shipload of Mormon emigrants, "The Brooklyn". The Meders then moved to Santa Cruz in February 1847, and lived for a number of years on Rancho Refugio (now known as Wilder Ranch State Park).

Moses was a wealthy businessman working in lumber, petroleum, and real estate. Meder Street in Santa Cruz is named for him. The Meders became disaffected with the LDS Church due to polygamy, and became members of the Reorganized LDS Church in 1868 (which had rejected polygamy).
