United States Naval Surgeon. A native of Delaware, he was appointed as an Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army on November 30, 1836. He resigned from the Army on June 30, 1837, and was appointed as an Assistant Surgeon in the United States Navy on September 6, 1837. He would serve the next 31 years in the Navy, being promoted to Surgeon on October 18, 1849. He served through the Civil War, retiring on October 21, 1868. On March 3, 1871 he was appointed Medical Director on the Retired List.
