He was first listed as Missing. Remains of an unidentified pilot were found at the crash site, interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) at plot P, grave 1035. After revisiting the site and the recovery of more artifacts the remains were exhumed and identified.

CAPT McLaughlin's name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. The rosette beside his name indicates that his remains were recovered. On April 10, 2006 McLaughlin's remains were buried at the Arlington National Cemetery at section 60, grave 749

The family of Joseph P McLaughlin is indebted to the research and perseverance of Rick Hanning of Australia for the identification of his remains and the proper burial of Joseph at Arlington National Cemetery.
