He was a Bataan Death March survivor. As a POW, the Japanese moved him from work camp to work camp until he ended up in a Japanese Forced Labor work camp in China. There, the POWs were forced to work in the coal mines. When his camp was liberated, Jim weighed about 68 pounds soaking wet. It took him a couple of years for complete mental and physical recovery.
