The eldest son of Dr. Henry Francis LeHunte Lyster and Winifred Lee Brent Lyster, William followed his father as an Army surgeon, joining the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He invented the Lyster Bag, a rubber-lined canvas bag used for water purification, which was used in both World Wars. William retired from the Army in 1932 with the rank of Colonel. In retirement, he lived inWashington, DC. Married in 1907 to Alice Chase Bissell, he had one daughter. He died in 1947, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
