LTC Gail Marie Guthrie Long, U.S. Army (Ret), 49, died 19 November 2006, at her home in DeRidder, La., a casualty of cancer. She was born 6 August 1957 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Donald L. and Mary E. Guthrie. On 24 November 1982, Gail married CW3 Gregory Robert Long, U.S. Army (Ret), the son of Cecil G. and Elaine L. Long of Eau Clair, Wisc. They have one son, Mathew Gerad Long of DeRidder, La. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She graduated from Weber High School and Weber State University. She was a licensed beautician. Following enlistment in the Army Reserve, she worked at Davis North Hospital in Clearfield, Utah, as a licensed practical nurse.
She was commissioned into the United States Army in 1980. She was subsequently stationed throughout the United States, Germany, Kosovo and Southwest Asia with units of the 101st Airborne, 1st Armor, 1st Calvary and 1st Infantry Divisions; the Army Medical Command and the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La.
Her awards and decorations include the Kosovo Campaign medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service medal with Seven Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation medal, Army Achievement medal, Army Superior Unit award, National Defense Service medal (2), Global War on Terrorism Service medal, Southwest Asia Service medal with Three Stars, Armed Forces Reserve medal, Kuwait Liberation medals from both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. She earned the Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Expert Field Medic Badge, Basic Russian Airborne Award and Russian Parachutist Badge. She was an honorary member of the Order of St. George and the Non Commissioned Officers Association. She was a member of AUSA, the American Legion and the VFW. She retired from the Army on 1 November 2004 and had been employed by Cubic Corporation at Fort Polk, La.
Gail was an elegant, artistic and multi-talented lady. Her interests included gardening, golfing, quilting, basket weaving, cross-stitching, bead making, antiques, furniture refinishing, collecting dolls and Civil War art. She doted on her son, her husband, her dog Scout, her home, her family and her friends. She was dearly loved by all who knew her.
Gail is survived by her husband, Greg, son Mathew, her parents, sisters Karol (David) Huges of Ogden, Utah, Donalee (Dan) Tracy of Reno, Nev., Jennifer (Michael) Earl, of Huntsville, Utah. Also her Grandmother Elsie Steler, her parents-in-law, sister-in-law, Connie (Micheal) Omodth, Eau Claire, Wisc., brother-in-law, Richard (Luanne) Long of Eleva, Wisc. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on 18 December 2006 at 1100 hours with military honors. Hixson Funeral Home in DeRidder is in charge of local arrangements.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or the Disabled American Veterans.
