Lawrence J. "Abe" Lincoln served as a Lieutenant General in the US Army. Assignments with the Corps of Engineers included preparing the Pacific's Eniwetok Atoll for atomic testing after World War II.

His decorations included 3 Distinguished Service Medals (one for service in WWII, and two for service in Vietnam) and the Legion of Merit.

Lt. Gen. Lincoln was a resident of Alexandria, and served for 35 years in posts that included Italy, North Africa, Hawaii and Korea. He was deputy Army chief of staff for logistics and had been a district engineer at three posts. He served as Commander at Fort Sam Houston (TX) from 1967-1968.

He was a native of Harbor Beach, Mich. He was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he taught military art and engineering. He received a master's degree in civil engineering from Princeton University.

Gen. Lincoln served in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1993, about 23 years after his retirement, the Army Corps of Engineers published a history of his life, "An Army Engineer."

He was elected "president for life" of his West Point class. He was a member of Army Navy Country Club, the Retired Officers Association and the Association of Graduates of West Point.
