Samuel was a son of William Cullen Young and Rebecca Isabell Young, who were first cousins. His father William was the son of Abraham Young, while his mother was the daughter of Abraham's brother John Archibald Young.

He was twice married. His first wife was Mamie Anna Colgan, daughter of Patrick Colgan and Mary Elizabeth Lawson. She was born in Georgia, and they married there in Chatham Co. on 16 Jan 1902. Together they had three children - Myrtle Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Haskel Boyd Jr; Samuel Augustus Jr and James Lindsley Young. Circa 1920, Samuel and Mamie divorced. She later remarried and divorced a second time, as at the time of her death in 1947, her surname is listed as Dodson. She is buried with her son James Lindsley Young and his wife in Harris Co. TX.

Samuel married secondly to Hattie May Prentice in 1921. She was the daughter of Alvin C Prentice and Sarah Jane Minich. There were no children born of the marriage, and Hattie survived her husband by nearly 40 years. She is buried in Ventura Co. CA.
