RADM Day graduated from the US Naval Academy with the class of 1892. At that time, they were required to serve two years at sea, before returning to Annapolis to take their final exams. He was appointed an ensign on 1 July 1894.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Captain George Calvin Day, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. AMERICA and the U.S.S. MONTANAN, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies to European ports through waters infested with enemy submarines and mines during World War I.
