Capt. W. L. Darnall Dies; Naval Dental Corps
Capt. William L. Darnall, U.S.N., 51, officer in command of the dental department of the Medical Center, died here today at the Naval Hospital after a brief illness.
Born June 11, 1889, in Lebanon, Ind., Capt. Darnall was graduated from the Indianapolis Dental School in 1913, and was commissioned a lieutenant (junior grade) in the Naval Dental Corps the following year. He was made a commander in 1929 and raised to the rank of captain in 1938.
Capt. Darnall, who served in many parts of the world, was assigned here in 1922 as an instructor in the Naval Dental School after doing post-graduate work. He was assigned dental surgeon of the aircraft carrier Lexington in 1928 and has served at naval hospitals in Parris Island, S.C., and San Diego, Calif.
Surviving are a widow, Mrs. Zella O. Darnalll; a daughter, Sarah Jane, wife of First Lt. L. Walker Smith of the U.S.M.C. and a son, William L. Darnall, jr., a student at the Northwestern University dental school.
Capt. Darnall made his residence at the Westchester Apartments. Arrangements are being made for burial services Friday at Arlington Cemetery.
