On 12 September 1911, Francis Ashby Heaton was born in Ohio to Adolphus Ashby Heaton, and Minnie Beahm Heaton. He was the first of the couple's five children. Francis completed three years of high school and later worked as a binder in a government printing office. When he entered the United States Army Corps of Engineers on 3 February 1941, Heaton was married. His wife and he had no children.


During his military career, Heaton was attached to the 121st Engineers, Company A and attained the final rank of Staff Sergeant. SSG Heaton served with the Army during interim war years between 1931 and 1941.


On 26 December 1941, SSG. Heaton, 30, died in line of duty (not in combat). He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 20, Site 50168 on December 30, 1941. Survived by his mother, his widow and siblings.
