Born Joseph Hamersky. After the deaths of his father in 1934, and mother in 1937 he and his siblings were placed in the Orphan Asylum Of The Holy Family in Emsworth, Pennsylvania. The spelling of the surname had changed soon after to Hamerski for a reason not known.


Entering in the military on June 3, 1943 in Greensburg Pennsylvania, Joseph was assigned to E Company, 376th Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division. Following a brief stay in England, the 94th landed on Utah Beach on September 8, 1944, and moved into Brittany to assume responsibility for containing approximately 50,000 German troops besieged in the Channel ports of Lorient and Saint-Nazaire.


The 94th inflicted over 2,700 casualties on the enemy and took 566 prisoners before being relieved on New Year's Day 1945 by the 66th Infantry Division.
