Alfred was born on July 31st, 1919 in the city of Newburyport, Massachusetts to Alfred Francis Hamel and Clara Laplante. After serving his country in World War II, he served his community as a firefighter and even saved his own family from a blazing inferno that caused severe damage to his home. He was also the best man at his brother Robert's wedding.

He died on July 20th, 1972 and is buried in Arlington National cemetery. He also has a memorial plaque in St. Joseph's cemetery in Amesbury, Massachusetts.
