By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant Ashley J. Griffin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Griffin distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving [as] Adjutant, 3d Battalion, 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the period from July 20 to 25, 1918, in front of Bouresches, France, and by his brilliant leadership. General Orders: GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 2 (June 3, 1919) Action Date: July 20 - 25, 1918.

Capt. Griffin was discharged in May 1919, not 1918.

Captain Griffin led Company L to secure the village of Creue during the 102nd Regiment's taking of Vigneulles, located in the center of the St. Mihiel salient on the night of Sept. 12, 1918, following the regiment's famous night march through the German line. This was the opening move of the St. Mihiel offensive. The following day Captain Griffin was relieved for transfer.
