Maj. William Preston "Tip" Graves was a son of William Jordan Graves, Sr. and Emily Henderson Graves. He had six older siblings.

Maj. William Preston "Tip" Graves married Hetty Scott on October 28, 1874.

Research shows Maj. William Preston "Tip" Graves died in Little Rock Barracks, formerly known as Little Rock Arsenal, a U. S. Army post established in 1840 and abandoned in 1890. Little Rock Barracks is also known as Post of Little Rock.
