"GOWIN, Rebecca, (Becky), of Springfield, Virginia, died on Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Virginia, of complications from a stroke on New Year's Eve. Becky, who was born in Aqua, Virginia in 1930, graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University), Harrisonburg, Harrisonburg City, Virginia in 1950. Before retiring in the 1980's, she was employed in a variety of administrative positions for the Columbia Gas County, Virginia; the Central Intelligence Agency (both in Washington, D.C., and Ankara, Turkey); Melpar, Inc., Fairfax, Virginia; and George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. She accompanied her husband, Bob, a retired military officer originally from Cattaraugus, N. Y., on overseas tours in Turkey, Puerto Rico, and Havana, Cuba. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Charlestown Owners Association, Springfield, Virginia for the past 13 years. She also served as treasurer and membership chairperson for the Fairfield High School Alumni Association, Fairfield, Virginia since its first meeting seven years ago. She was an active participant in knitting and donating numerous baby afghans for Project Linus, a nonprofit organization dedicated to distributing handmade afghans, blankets, comforters and quilts to deserving children throughout the United States. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Bob, of Springfield, Virginia; a daughter, Vicki McNulty of Lorton, Virginia; a brother, Harry Fox of Charlottesville, Charlottesville City, Virginia; two sisters, Lula Rice of Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia, and Betty Jo Bishop of Raphine, Virginia. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations in her memory be made to the American Cancer Society of (error: or) the American Heart Association. Friends may call on Sunday, January 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Demaine Springfield Annandale Chapel, Backlick and Edsall Roads, Springfield, Virginia. Services will be held on Monday, January 29, at 3 p.m. at Ft. Myer (Old Post) Chapel with interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery."
