John was born on 2 May 1918 in La Grande, Oregon, the youngest of four children to John Washington and Frances Madilia Fleshman.
A May 1936 graduate of Elgin High School in La Grande, John attended the Oregon Institute of Technology in Portland. He enlisted in the Oregon Army National Guard in December 1939, and was commissioned as a Captain (Engineers) in October 1942. Following WWII, John married and returned to America with his new German bride, Pia Maria Wenniger. John and Pia lived in Portland where daughter Carol was born. John and Pia eventually divorced, and she and Carol returned to Germany. John married again in February 1957 to Ethel M. Wicker and they adopted John Wesley Fleshman, Jr.
John retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in January 1974 and became a civil engineer for the federal government serving at posts in Alaska, Idaho and California. He retired from government service in May 1981 and settled permanently in Salem.
John is survived by Ethel, his daughter Carol who lives with her husband in Germany, and his son John who lives in Virginia with his family.
