During the Spanish-American War, John Tracey Edson served as an ensign aboard a gunboat, the U. S. S. Gloucester, and was in the harbor at Havana when the Spanish ship the Infanta Maria Teresa sank. As the Spanish sailors were swimming for their lives, Edson told his captain he knew how to handle small boats, because he was a yachtsman.' Edson took a small cutter and, making several trips, rescued about two hundred officers and men, including an admiral of the Spanish navy.
