Entered service, May 15, 1918, as a OTC cadet, at Camp Gordon, GA. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, August 26, 1918 and 1st lieutenant, October 19, 1918. He was assigned to the 810 Pioneer Infantry Regiment, as a battalion Adjutant, Camp Green, NC. He was discharged from the service, September 29, 1919.

Enlisted, February 24, 1921, as a private, in Troop C, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. On July 1, 1921 Squadron A was reorganized into the 51st Machine Gun Squadron, NYNG, he was assigned to Troop C. He served in the ranks becoming the 1st Sergeant, of Troop C and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, June 8, 1923.

On February 16, 1928 the 51st Machine Gun Squadron reorganized into the 2nd Squadron 101st Cavalry Regiment, NYNG, he was assigned to Troop G. June 7, 1929, he was promoted Captain and commander of Troop K, 101st Cavalry. He was discharged, November 1, 1933.

March 14, 1934, he is on the staff of the 51st Cavalry Brigade, NYNG, and was transferred to the 21 Cavalry Division, as Chief of Staff, July 5, 1940.

January 15, 1941, he is assigned as Executive Officer of the 102th Coast Artillery ( anti aircraft )
