Major Arthur Cobb of Wilmington, North Carolina, the former special assistant to the Attorney General and retired major of the Chemical Warfare Service died in the morning hours of Saturday, May 17, 1941, at Mt Alto Hospital in Washington D.C.
Major Cobb, who had been in ill health for many months, was taken to the hospital on Friday, May 16, 1941.
Born in Wilmington NC on June 28 1875, he attended Trinity College (now Duke University), the University of North Carolina, studied law at the University of Tennessee, and continued his studies at Christ Church Oxford University in England.
Major Cobb, who retired in 1923 from the Army, was an executive officer at the Amatol Arsenal N J during World War I and later was a chief of arsenals Administration Division Ordnance Department.
After the World War I, Major Cobb was active in organizing the Lakehurst NJ proving ground and served as chemical warfare officer on the staff of the commanding general of the Fourth Corps Area.
He invented a booster for gas shells and designed and developed a principle of constant weight variable charge load for the shell.
In 1923, he was appointed special assistant to the Attorney General.
In 1933, he was counsel for the Senate committee which investigated air mail and ocean mail contracts.
Major Cobb was an attorney with the Claims Division of the Justice Department handling shipping litigation.
Major Cobb was a member of Phi Delta Theta and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities.
He was survived by his widow, Mrs Arthur Cobb; six children Alice Jane Howell, Sally, and Arthur Cobb Jr., and Mrs Harold E Jones of California and Mrs Paul Doyle of Roanoke Virginia.
