Charles attended the Demonstration High School (now University High School), a
part of LSU's College of Education. Upon graduation in 1918, he was admitted to LSU,
and after two years there, he was appointed in 1920 as Cadet to the United States Military
Academy (USMA) at West Point, NY. While at the academy, he became a lacrosse
player and earned a letter each year, was selected Honorable Mention All-American in
1922, and played on the academy's first National Championship Team in 1923.
Graduating from USMA in 1924, Charles received a commission as second
lieutenant in the Infantry branch of the Army and served 25 years until retirement in
1949. His military service included a variety of command and staff assignments both in
the United States and abroad in China, England and France during World War II, and
Japan during its occupation by the United States following the war.
Charles married Evelyn Crutchfield of Columbus, Georgia, in 1931. A son,
Charles Hunter Coates, Jr., was born on July 26, 1935, and a daughter, Patricia Mae
Coates, was born on June 19, 1944.
Charles returned to LSU following his Army retirement in 1949, earning a Master
of Arts degree in Psychology in 1952, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Sociology in
1955. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Sociology at the University of
Maryland, College Park, Maryland, serving there until his death in 1972.
