Henry Chritzman was born c. 1820, the son of George & Mary Chritzman. In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first served at the rank of private with Co. E, 2nd Pa Inf, April 20 - July 26, 1861. He then enlisted in Gettysburg September 12, 1861, and promoted to the rank of captain on December 14 following. Wounded May 31, 1862, and discharged by surgeon's certificate February 4, 1863. The July 24, 1862 edition of the Gettysburg Star and Sentinel announced that he had been offered a colonel's rank with a new regiment, but that apparently did not happen.
