He then enlisted in Gettysburg September 12, 1861, and promoted to the rank of captain on December 14 following. Wounded May 31, 1862, and discharged by surgeon's certificate February 4, 1863. The July 24, 1862 edition of the Gettysburg Star and Sentinel announced that he had been offered a colonel's rank with a new regiment, but that apparently did not happen.
