VICTOR LEE CARY, Retired Brigadier General, United States Army, of Houston, Texas passed away Sunday, April 30, 2006. Mr. Cary was born in Richmond, Virginia on January 19, 1917 the son of Benjamin F. and Myrtle L. Miller Cary. General Cary was named for a historically renowned military leader with whom his grandfather served, General Robert E. Lee. As his family's distinguished military heritage, General Cary continued the tradition by developing an impeccable career of dedication to his country and his fellow Americans. Brigadier General Cary began his military career in 1933 as a Private with the Virginia National Guard. He then completed his first college studies as a graduate of University of Missouri, 1939. During the 32 years that he served he befriended some of our country's finest and best known heroes from President Dwight Eisenhower to General Douglas MacArthur. August 1, 1970, General Cary retired from active service to enter the business world from which his degree, MBA, 1949, Harvard Business School would be put to future successes. General Cary moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas to become the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Wortz Company. In 1978, he was selected as the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce Small Business Man of the Year. General Cary was the first to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award of which he was a charter member, Fort Smith Heritage Foundation and director of Fort Smith Street Car Restoration, Inc. When Wortz moved to Poteau, Oklahoma, General Cary became involved in the Poteau community and a member of the Carl Albert State College family as a trustee for the Development Foundation. General Cary relocated to Houston upon his retirement from Wortz Co. He remains active trustee with two scholars each academic year with himself and his wife, Alice as providers. In 2000, General Cary graciously funded the Gerald Ford Endowed Professorship with a contribution. General Cary is survived by his loving family, wife, Alice Lyle Cary whom he married on March 13, 1985, and her sons, Harry and Doug Scoufos; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and host of friends and military comrades. General Cary will be placed in Arlington National Veterans Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia with full military honors with those he commanded and served. The family has a request all memorials be made to a favorite charity in General Victor Lee Cary's name.
