After his father died in 1927, William's mother managed the farm. Like 2 of his sisters, Rose and Carrie, William never married. The 3 remained at home and helped their mother run the farm until she died in January of 1938.
William suffered a coronary occlusion in May of that same year. He died at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 28 days old.
He was survived by 5 sisters, Louise Husemann, Anna Luecke, Minnie Filges, Rose Abel and Carrie Abel.
Visitation was held at the family home until 12:30 p.m. on 07 May 1938. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. that afternoon at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Columbia Bottoms, Missouri.
