Judge Samuel Hitchcock was the 4th son of Noah and Mary Hitchcock and the grandson of David Hitchcock. He married Lucy Caroline Allen, the daughter of Famed Revolutionary War Hero Ethan Allen on May 26, 1789. They were the parents of six children;

Judge Hitchcock was a native of Brimfield Mass. and graduated from Harvard College in 1777. He removed to Vermont in 1786 where he practiced law and was appointed the first States Attorney for Chittenden county, an office he held from 1787 until 1790. He became the first Attorney General of Vermont in October of 1790. He was a member of the Convention of Delegates of the People of Vermont to ratify the constitution of The United States. The charter of The University of Vermont is said to have been written by him. He served as a trustee of this university from the start and served until his death.

Judge Hitchcock's son Henry followed his father's career in a mirror like fashion, being the first Attorney General appointed in the state of Alabama. Both men were known as excellent men of scholarship with "reflective and profound legal minds."

Judge Hitchcock's wife Caroline is buried with him in this beautiful cemetery.
