Harold Callaway was born September 30, 1923, to William Callaway and Catherine McArdle and died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010. Harold was the youngest of six children, all born in the Irish Hills of San Luis Obispo. He grew into a gifted storyteller, oral historian and balladeer, possessing a profound knowledge of English poetry and song. In the late 50''s, he started C&J Pest Control with Oliver Jones, which they ran successfully for over 40 years. Customers said it was a life counseling service in disguise calling on both for their good sense, wit and humor.

Harold took on the tremendous effort of raising his three children after the death of his wife Carol Elaine. Later, he also reared his two granddaughters Charlotte and Caroline. He was a quintessential family man who gave support to all. Harold is survived by children, Daniel (Melanie), Lisa, and Carl Callaway; grandchildren Charlotte Craig and Caroline, Kevin, Eric, and Rachel Callaway; sister Alice Randall; sister in laws Elvina Callaway, Sally Calloway; brother in law Carl Sorby; and several nieces and nephews. A Catholic Mass will be held at 10 a.m., March 9, 2010, at the Old Mission in San Luis Obispo, followed by a reception at Laguna Lake Mobile Estates, 1801 Prefumo Canyon Road, in San Luis Obispo. Donations can be made for the Harold Callaway Poetry-Song Scholarship
