US Senator. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he grew up across the state line in Princeton, New Jersey. A successful businessman, he was a merchant in China, served as director of the Delaware and Raritan Canal Company, the Camden and Amboy Railroad Company and was president and treasurer for the Philadelphia and Trenton Railroad Company. He was also active in public service. While in China he was appointed by President James Monroe as the United State Consul for the port at Canton. He was a member of the New Jersey state constitutional convention and ran, unsuccessfully, for governor in 1844. He was elected to fill a vacant New Jersey United States Senate seat in 1853 and re-elected in 1857. He served in the United States Senate until his death.
