John served as a Colonel, Signal Corps, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Fairfield County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He was a 1924 graduate of the United States Military Academy and a 1933 graduate of the Signal School Officers Course,

John was a "undocumented" passenger on C-47 #41-18661. That is military records did not show him as a assigned passenger and he may have simply got on the plane at the last minute for an unknown reason.

C-47 #41-18661 took off, with a crew of 4 and 1 passenger, from Dobodura Airfield, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea on a cargo mission to Port Moresby, National Capital District, Papua New Guinea.

They crashed, for an unknown reason, near Lake Myola, Central Province, Papua New Guinea. There is some indications that they may have been shot down by Japanese forces in the area.

John was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war. Only his remains have been found from this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was originally interred in Papua New Guinea and was later repatriated here on March 5, 1948.
