CHESAPEAKE - Walter B. Abbott II, 84, of Savory Crescent, went to be with the Lord March 2, 2010 in Chesapeake. He was born in Irvington, NJ, but was a longtime resident of South Norfolk. He was the son of the late Walter Brittle Abbott Sr. and Bernetta Lane Abbott. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines as an ensign during World War II. He was a member of South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church and the South Norfolk Masonic Lodge No. 339. He retired from U.S. Gypsum Co. with 27 years of service and spent 10 years with the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Lee Spruill Abbott; daughter, Vicki Alice Baxter and husband Allen; a son, Walter Brittle Abbott III and wife Maria, all of Chesapeake; six grandchildren, Kristi Taylor, Jeffrey Baxter, Wally and Kyle Abbott, Serena, Katy and Kelly Valentine; four great- grandchildren; and a brother, Byron Abbott and his wife Betty of Virginia Beach. A sister, Charlotte Abbott Floyd preceded him in death. The family wishes to thank Dr. Frank Johnston, Dr. Larry Legum, Dr. A. Vaid, Dr. D. Shah and staff, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and Hospice for their excellent care of Mr. Abbott. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Magnolia Cemetery in Norfolk with Pastor Amos Eby officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Chesapeake Humane Society, in memory of Mr. Abbott's love of animals. Graham Funeral Home
