Captain Berliner was the pilot of B-47E
Stratojet #52-0402, serving with the 376th
Bomb Wing at Lockbourne Air Force Base,
Ohio.

He was killed when his bomber crashed on
takeoff, due to faulty gauges that caused an
unintentional loading imbalance in the fuel
tanks, putting more weight to the rear. The
aircraft faltered and a wing struck the
ground, and went out of control and crashed
and burned on the runway. All three airmen
aboard perished.

The other two officers were:

MAJ Thomas Arthur Henry and
1LT Carl Atherton, III
