Gilbert Hunt, Longtime Dodson Leader, Dies
Gilbert Hunt, a leader in the Dodson area for many years, died in Groom Memorial Hospital at 12:05 a.m. Friday, April 9 following a long illness. He re-entered the hospital only a few days before his death.
Mr. Hunt was 67 and a lifelong resident of the area.
He farmed near Dodson until his health failed.
Few men in that part of the county had a longer record of community work, and few had given their time more unselfishly.
He was a member of Dodson school board for more than 20 years, and part of this time he was president of the board. His tenure included difficult years in the school's life, the depression, World War II, and the years of adjustment that came afterward.
Mr. Hunt became a member of the Church of Christ in 1919 and served as an elder many years. Only last year, he was one of the group instrumental in building the new Church of Christ.
Gilbert Edwin Hunt was born Jan. 21, 1898 in the Madge community, then in Greer County, Okla. His father, Charley Hunt, died while he was a small child. It was as a child, too, that he moved to Dodson.
He was married to Miss Ruth Royal June 29, 1919 in Wellington.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Church of Christ at Dodson, with Minister Alva Johnson of Turkey officiating. Buria1 was in the Dodson Cemetery under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Weldon Sexton, L. B. Jordan, Roy N. Ginn, Pat Bouchelle, J. C. Howell, Floyd Teutsch, Edwin Crowder and Ross Swift.
Surviving Mr. Hunt are his wife; four sons and two daughters: Howard Hunt of Dodson; Vance Hunt of Indianapolis, Ind.; Dale Hunt and Kenneth Hunt of Dallas; Mrs. Frank Duckworth of Muleshoe; and Mrs. Bob Garton of Lone Wolf, Okla.
Other survivors are two sisters and a brother, Mrs. P. W. O'Brien, Mrs. Van Bonneau, and R. T. Jameson of Dodson. There are 15 grandchildren.
One son, Lt. Elba Hunt, died in action during World War II and his mother, Mrs. Mattie Jameson, passed away only a few months ago.
