Ciivl War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served as an enlisted man in the United States Regular Cavalry for many years before the Civil War. Appointed Colonel of the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, he was given command of the Cavalry forces around Suffolk, Virginia over Brigadier General Charles C. Dodge, even though General Dodge was senior in rank. This led to General Dodge's resignations.
