William Leonidis Gary was born on 17 February 1804 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, to Thomas West Gary and Rebecca A Jones. He married first Nancy Smith on 11 April 1826, but she died a year later. William married second Frances Elizabeth Satterwhite on 1 November 1824, in Stony Point, South Carolina. Their children were Thomas Pickens, Newton, Ann Eliza, and Frances Rebecca Gary. William Leonidis Gary died, 27 August 1852, aged 48, in Tuskegee, Alabama, and was buried at Tuskegee City Cemetery.
