James Monroe Nicholson, son of Harris Nicholson and the former, Lucinda Long, was believed to be born in Virginia on the 13th day of March 1784 or 85. James had two brothers, Britton and Nathaniel. His family first moved to Warren County, North Carolina and then on to the area around Milledgeville, Georgia.

On the 7th of October 1813, James married Mary Bedell Stone, daughter of Warren Henley Stone and the former Martha Bedell, who were Quakers living in Clarke County, Georgia. James and Mary, known as "Polly" by the family, had seven children. Their five sons, where named for men noted for politics or religion: Matthew, Washington Biddle, Monroe, Absalom, and Wesley and two daughters: Lucinda and Elizabeth, named for their grandmothers.

James was an industrious and successful planter; who first moved his family to Autauga County, Alabama and then to his large plantation in Macon County, near Tuskegee.

It was here in Tuskegee that James and Mary Nicholson lived until their death; Polly in 1841 and James ten years later. James Nicholson departed this life on the 7th of October 1851. He was laid to rest in Tuskegee City cemetery beside his beloved wife and near his father, Harris.
