LAYTON--Ethel Ann Whitesides Adams, 88, died May 26, 1999, in Layton, Utah.

She was born September 20, 1910 in Layton, Utah to mary Alice and William Wilford Whitesides, the sixth of 10 children. Ethel attended Davis High School. She married Joseph Dunn Adams on April 10, 1929 in the Salt Lake Temple. Joe and Ethel raised their family in Layton. Joe died in 1962.Ethel worked for many years at Adams Super Market, in the bakery owned and operated by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ken Ray. After the bakery closed, Ethel worked for years in the Ogden Temple laundry. After retirement from the temple at age 70, she worked for several years at the Heritage Care Center in Bountiful, Utah.

Ethel was well known for her good cooking, (especially homemade bread and pies) and her tied quilts. She loved children and enjoyed reading and writing letters and notes. She had a great capacity for recalling people and life events and recently wrote her life sketch entitled, "Stirred Up Memories." Ethel was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many years as a primary teacher in the Layton 5th and 12th Wards. More recently she was asked to write letters to the full-time missionaries of her ward.

Ethel is survived by five of her children, Mary Alice (William "Rusty") Pettit, San Luis Obispo, CA; Delbert J. (Fern) Adams, Ogden, Utah; Madge (Les) Green, Layton, Utah; Elizabeth (Paul) Major, Kaysville, Utah and Ted D. (Suzanne) Adams, Salt Lake City, Utah; sister, Alice Johnson, Layton, Utah; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Adams; three children, Janeen, Paul and Jocelyn; sister, Mary; and brothers, Carl, Wilford, Ferris, Zulon, Maine, Joe and William.

The family wished to express their thanks to her doctors, including Dr. Charles Bean and the physical therapy and nursing staff (including Missy) at the Rocky Mountain Care Center during the last seven months of Ethel's life. The family also expressed thanks to her good neighbors and extended family.

Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 1999 at Layton Holmes Creek Stake Center, 125 Chapel Street, Layton, Utah. There will be a viewing from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1 at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road and from 9:30-10:45 a.m. at the stake center prior to services. Interment will be at the Kaysville City Cemetery, Kaysville, Utah.
