Philando J. Long died at his home on Long Avenue on Thursday, March 10, after an illness of four months, though ailing in health for the past year.
Mr. Long was one of the oldest settlers in White Bear, having come here in 1870. He was born in Michigan on June 19, 1842, being 78 years and 8 months old at the time of his death. He came to Minnesota with his parents when 12 years old and has resided in the state continuously since that time. In 1863 he was married to Miss Frances E. Soule. During the Civil War he served for three years with the Minnesota Mounted Rangers. When he moved to White Bear, in September, 1870, he took up his residence in the home that he occupied on the day of his death.
Mr. Long was a member of the G.A.R. and was a veteran member of Garnet Lodge No. 166 A.F.&A. M. By his request the funeral was conducted by the Masonic order.
He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Clara Nelson, a son, Jesse, twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His wife and a daughter, Mrs. George Clewett, died within the past year and a half.
The funeral was held under the direction of Garnet Lodge on Saturday. Internment in St. John's Cemetery.

Philando (aka Philander) Long, when 21 years old, enlisted in the Union army at Anoka, Anoka County, MN as a Private. On 3/7/1864 he mustered into "D" Co. MN Hatch's Battalion Cavalry. He was Mustered Out on 5/1/1866.
