Mrs. Hugh Allen Dies Following Operation
Mrs. Douglas M. Allen, wife of Hugh S. Allen, general manager of Kern County Land Company, and who resided in this county most of her life, died last night in a San Francisco hospital following an operation. The family home is at 2307 Cedar Street.
The daughter of a Kern County pioneer, Mrs. Allen, about 60, was well known for her church and charity interests here, and for her work in connection with Kern County history. The late Mrs. Allen and her husband were particularly interested in Indian ethnology of the southwest.
She was born in Virginia, and was brought here when about 3 years of age by her parents, the late Meriwether and Ellen Macmurdo. Her father, a civil engineer, at one time served as city surveyor.
Educated in the Bakersfield schools, she taught for several years at Panama School and in the city school system.
On June 5, 1909, she and Mr. Allen were married in Bakersfield, which they have made their home since that time. There were two children, Hugh Meriwether Allen, now in the oil business at Maricopa, and Mrs. Dorothy Douglas McGrady of Casper, Wyo., both of whom survive.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Sidney Hugh Allen of Maricopa and Frances McGrady of Casper, Wyo.
Mrs. Allen was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Woman's Club and and Kern County Historical Society.
She devoted considerable time and interest toward improvement of conditions for native Indians in Kern County, and was partly responsible for them receiving old age pensions. She was also interested in every charitable enterprise in the community, including the Children's Home Society.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Flickinger-Digier Chapel.
