MUSCATINE, Iowa - Helen L. Smith, 95, of formerly of New Boston, Illinois, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at Muscatine Care Center.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the St. Mathias Church, 215 West Eighth Street. The Reverend Jason Crossen of the Ss. Mary and Mathias Parish will officiate the service. Casket bearers will be Bill Smith Jr., John B. Smith, Bruce W. Smith, Chester A. Smith, Kevin Smith, Jeff O'Leary, Patrick Smith, Greg Thackery, and Rick Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2007, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa, 12007 190th St, Monticello, Iowa 52310-0418.
Helen was born on June 15, 1912, on a farm near Hopkinton, Iowa, the daughter of Phillip and Caroline Grief DeShaw. She graduated from Hopkinton High School and Lenox College at Hopkinton, with a degree in teaching. She was a substitute teacher for Delaware County schools.
She married Kenneth W. Murray on July 19, 1934. She later married Dean Smith on September 29, 1943. Both husbands preceded her in death.
The Smith's were farmers for 35 years with 28 of those years in the New Boston bay island area. They retired in 1979.
She was a member of St. Mathias Church.
Survivors include one son, William D. Smith and wife, Dorothy, of New Boston; four daughters, Lois Lawrence and husband, Luke, of Central City, Donna Brislawn and friend, Tom Rogers, of Muscatine, Deanna McCormick and husband, Kenneth, of Ontario, Oregon, and Joyce Melvin of Moline, Illinois; two daughters-in-law, Mary Smith of Muscatine, and Virginia Smith of Clark, Missouri; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 10 great great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bernice Crowley of Temple, Texas, and Phyllis Kuda of Cedar Rapids.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, two sons, Gary Wayne Smith and Dean K. Smith, one step-daughter, Beverly Emerson, and two brothers, Merle DeShaw and Howard DeShaw.
