Civil War Union Brigadier General. Served as Colonel of the 2nd Louisiana (USA) Infantry, one of the first Union Colored units. Commanded a bridge with distinction at Port Hudson. Later, commanded a Division of Colored troops in the Army of the James. Great-Grandson of Declaration of Independence Signer Robert Treat Paine.
