Great-grandfather is John George Heidt, I, Salzburger who came to Georgia Colony in 1749. Father is Reverend and Georgia Assemblyman Emanuel Heidt.

Earned a Doctorate of Divinity from Emery College 1859. Law graduate from University of Georgia 1861. Methodist Minister. Served in Confederate Army, rose to rank of Sergeant. Fought in the Civil War, Claghorn's Company, 1st Regiment, Olmstead's Brigade and Company C, GA Light Artillery. President of La Grange College from 1881-1885, President of Southwestern University from 1885-1889 and President of Reinhardt University.
