Doctor loved to deliver babies, especially his own.
The Tulsa obstetrician adopted a baby girl his patient was unable to keep.

Bob Aikman delivered enough babies over his career to start a good-size army, a fact that likely was not lost on the amateur military historian.

But one of those 27,000 estimated deliveries held an extra-special place for the longtime Tulsa obstetrician and gynecologist: that of his adopted daughter, Kimalynn Aikman.

Kimalynn, now 17, said her birth mother was one of Aikman's patients.

During the woman's pregnancy, she confided in Aikman that her circumstances were not going to allow her to keep her baby after it was born.

"Well, Dad had wanted another child," Kimalynn said. "So his family adopted me. He knew that I was his daughter as he was delivering me.

"It was an amazing blessing. He always called me his 'chosen child.' "

Dr. Robert Howard "Bob" Aikman, who believed that he had been chosen by God for his line of work, died Dec. 12 at age 69 after a three-year fight with colon cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at World Outreach Church under the direction of Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Funeral Home.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., Aikman lived and practiced medicine in Canada before returning to the United States in 1979.

He joined the City of Faith Medical Center in 1981 as the chief of staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology before later starting his own practice, Birth Inc.

He was still practicing until his death, family members said.

"He was one of the most gentle people I ever knew," his son Zach Aikman said.

"He was a really good listener, and everyone who came into contact with him left feeling like he was their friend."

In his spare time, Aikman was a military-history buff who built an impressive collection of miniature military-related figurines.

But delivering babies was his passion.

"It was all he ever wanted to do," Zach Aikman said. "He felt he was called to it. And as such he viewed each one of his patients as a special, unique case, and he would talk about all of them that way."

Aikman's survivors include his wife, Barbara Aikman; two sons, David and Zach Aikman; five daughters, Jennifer Aikman-Smith, Laurie Aikman-Takagaki, Kimalynn Aikman, Kristen Thompson and Karen Von Moses; and six grandchildren.
