Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company G, 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on March 28, 1864. He served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out with his company on July 12, 1865.

The son of Daniel [John in this John's death certificate] & Elizabeth (Williams) Lutz, in 1860 he was living with his farming family in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Lancaster June 23, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 28 as a private with Co. H in the six-month organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pa), and honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster March 28, 1864, mustered into federal service at Philadelphia April 1 as a private with Co. G, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. His obituary erroneously claims he was with the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry during Sherman's march to the sea when he was with the 79th Pennsylvania Infantry during that time.

He married Mary C. Brook or Brock ca. 1866 and fathered George B. (b. 01/??/67), Mary C. (b. 08/13/69 - married a Clinton), John W. (b. 08/12/70), Harry (b. 07/10/72), Anna E. (b. 10/10/74), Margaret (b. 12/??/77), and Nathan H. (b. @1880). He died at his daughter Mary's home from "chronic cystitis & [?] arthritis" with "chronic nephritis" a contributing factor.
